Bang & Crash
In the summer of 2015 Jac had an idea to start a new activity involving music. The feeling was that anyone can make music so we should give it a go.
A grant was applied for to buy instruments and we were fortunate enough to be awarded enough from The Big Lottery Fund to buy enough Djembies, Conga's, Bongo's, Ukelelie's, Glocks and shakey rattley things to get started. She also advertised for someone to help out weekly, to which Louie Lou answered and from that day forward, they have made a lot of music together and had a lot of fun when the Bangers and Crashers were born. |
We advertised the fact that we were going to start "Bang and Crash" sessions with the idea of picking popular music and drumming along to them and seeing what we could come up with.
A few months after getting going, Jac was told about a guy called David Stanley who ran "The Music Man Project" (MMP) in Southend. This was started by him early 2000 and had become hugely popular. David's belief is that people with learning difficulties have as much passion for music as everyone else and he wanted to guide them into learning and performing.
In 2015 he took his many groups of performers and hired The London Palladium, where they put on their own show. It was a huge success.
On finding out about the project, Jac went with Louie Lou who jointly runs Bang & Crash, along to a meeting in Norwich where they met with David who was offering to mentor other Mencaps to be a part of The Music Man Project. We were so excited once there and hearing about it that we said yes straight away.
A month later we officially became Music Man Project Suffolk. We are so proud to be a part of the project and our members love it. We used the show DVD to learn some of the songs which we had great pleasure in performing for David when he came to visit, he was thrilled to bits with the effort we had put in. We have since performed at The London Palladium and The Royal Albert Hall…wow, what an experience.
As well as learning the MMP songs, we have a few popular songs that we are learning rhythms to and are putting our own stamp on them, we perform these locally and get a fantastic response.
We are so proud of the Bang and Crashers for how they love to perform and their enthusiasm.
Our future plans are to perform in local venues, residential homes and anywhere we might get an invite in readiness for taking part in the next big stage show with the Music Man Project. There are 2 large shows in the planning stage for future events.
We are currently looking for someone who can play the piano to help us, it will make it easier for us to learn the songs for MMP. Also any kind of musician to join in with our Bang & Crash style of music too.
Our music sessions run on a Wednesday 10am-12pm and cost £2.

If you would like to become a part of our Bang & Crash group, please call in and let us know, or send us a message on the Unity Center Facebook page or on here.
Our Bang & Crash group has grown to more than double in size this year which is amazing. Our problem now is needing more instruments which we need to fundraisers for. We would also love it if people could donate any of these items, even if it was just one item. For instance we need 7 additional triangles which can be found with a starting price of £3 each, if 7 people donated one each, we would be up to our quota. Please see examples of instruments that we need below and the list of how many more we need.
Wooden blocks 12, tambourines 16, shakers 18, Djembies 11, triangles 7.
