All About You
All about you is a new free activity run by Chairwoman Jac and is aimed at people with anxieties, PTSD and other stress related problems.
Jac was diagnosed with PTSD early in 2019 having been through 2 years of one stressful event after another. With a lot of support from friends, family and the Unity Centre staff, she was able to recover from a lot of the problems this caused and she wants to help others. Not everyone is
fortunate enough to have a supportive network.
The idea of the sessions will be to start at 9.30 so parents can get their little ones to school.
We will start with 15 minutes of relaxing music to unwind and breath. After we will have 45 minutes of positive group chat, this will be about things we would like to do and we will find ways to help each other achieve these goals.
Some may want to simply find time to go for a coffee with a friend or a meal out with their other half, and we can help out as a group to make that happen. Some might want to do something a little more daring like a parachute jump, so we can fundraise to make sure that happens too. Jac is fully aware as a parent of children with disabilities, that we can lose ourselves. She is hoping that with the support of the group, people will start to rediscover who they are apart from being a parent or carer. You don't have to be a parent or carer to take part, many different reasons are the cause of stress and anxiety, we can all help each other.
After the first hour, for those that want to we can do activities, we have had many suggestions for activities and are always happy to hear more. The favourites are making a big quilt, hand massages, art and crafts, Lego, Scalextric and Airfix type model building. But if people want to continue to relax in our new “chill room” then they can. We will also be starting a positive newsletter which anyone can make contributions to, they don't have to be a part of the group, just submit your positive stories and we'll put them to print. We are hoping to distribute these into the community via doctors’ surgeries, clinics and the library.
This is not a therapy session, we won’t be talking about our stresses and problems but if you feel like you need to speak with someone about them, then you can book a time with Jac who will be happy to listen.
We would like to start a men only group too, we are currently looking for a man who would like join our team of volunteers to run this.
